We examined the alignment of nanorods-embedded nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with using the slit coater, which was originally proposed to control the ]alignment of NLC molecules. In this experiment, NLC substance in which TiO2 nanorods was dispersed was coated on a glass substrate. It was found that the uniform alignment of NLC was performed whereas the alignment of the TiO2 nanorods was not confirmed. It was assumed that the particle concentration of the TiO2 nanorods in the NLC substance was insufficient in this experiment.

Supramolecular liquid crystals are complexes in which some molecules are assembled by non-covalent bonds such as a hydrogen bond, as a result, they show liquid crystalline phases. Nucleic acid bases selectively form thermodynamically stable Watson-Crick base pairs with its complementary partner by the hydrogen bond. We focused on the nucleic acid base supramolecular complexes with a view toward the emergence of liquid crystalline phases. In this study, the adenine and thymine derivatives with an oligo (ethylene oxide) chain or a chiral moiety were synthesized, and the phase transition behavior of their complexes was investigated.

連続的な誘電吸収法による液晶ディスプレイ品質評価手法の提案 CiNiiでみる

It is known that "Fricker", "Image-sticking" and "Mura" is quality defect of LC display. We have developed and used an evaluation method like VHR, RDC and Ion-density measurement to evaluate for LC display quality. Now, we propose new quality evaluation for LC display by continuous dielectric absorption method. There is a possibility that this method will be additional knowledge to the quality. In this presentation, we report an outline of this method and an inspection result.

Lanthanides have a high magnetic moment derived from 4f orbital electrons not involved in bonding. In this study, we focused on the orientationally order of the columnar liquid crystal phase to improve the magnetic properties by increasing the orientation of lanthanides. We tried to synthesize eight-vertex coordination compound containing lanthanide as the central metal, and investigated their liquid crystallinity and magnetic properties.

ポリビニルイミダゾールラビング配向膜における液晶混合によるアンカリング制御 CiNiiでみる

An easy axis appears parallel or perpendicular to the rubbing direction on poly(vinyl imidazole) when using different liquid crystal materials. The easy axis changes from parallel to perpendicular by mixing liquid crystals with different easy axis at a certain mixing ratio. Transmittance in a wedge TN cell was measured as a function of cell thickness using different LC mixtures. We successfully change an azimuthal anchoring strength by mixing liquid crystals at suitable mixing ratio.

物理架橋可能なアゾベンゼン液晶高分子の光応答性 CiNiiでみる

Covalently crosslinked liquid-crystalline polymer films containing azobenzene chromophores bend toward a light source upon irradiation with UV light. However, covalently crosslinked polymers cannot be remolded after preparation because they are insoluble and infusible. In this work, we prepared physically crosslinked azobenzene liquid-crystalline polymers. We sheared the melt polymers to obtain films with homogenous alignment. The films showed macroscopic deformation upon exposure to light. This result indicates that physical crosslinks can convert the motion of mesogens into mechanical work of the films.

液晶レンズ設計のための光線追跡 CiNiiでみる

We introduce the useful ray tracing function for designing a liquid crystal lens. This function considers spatially distributed anisotropy depending applied voltages. The liquid crystal lens is one of the practical application near future, which can electrically control focal length without mechanical driving. Thus, the lens is expected to be applied in not only miniaturizing general lens systems but also vision enhancement such as glasses and contact lens. This software will powerfully support designing such new lens applications. In this paper, we show simple examples of lc lens' simulation based on our developed technique.

動く光を利用した高分子相分離構造の二次元制御 CiNiiでみる

The interest of soft materials has grown because of the wide range of application possibilities. To emerge the function of soft materials, the hierarchical control of molecular alignment patterns is efficient. Among them, photoalignment technique is known as one of the practical approaches to generate alignment structures. By controlling the direction of linearly polarized light, arbitrary molecular alignment pattern can be achieved. Recently, a novel photoalignment process based on the new concept of scanning wave photopolymerization (SWaP) using a spatial light-triggered molecular motion in a film as a polymerization reaction has been proposed. In the SWaP process, there are two phases composed of produced polymers and remaining monomers, thus it is reasonable that a phase separation occurs between polymers and monomers and phase separated structures are formed in the film. In this study, we demonstrated the alignment control of polymer phase separated structures by SWaP process, aiming to fabricate functional materials with optical properties.

光重合性官能基被覆ナノ粒子が高分子液晶複合材料の重合誘起相分離過程に及ぼす影響 CiNiiでみる

The polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have attracted much attentions and partially utilized for electro-optical (EO) applications including, smart window, holographic devices as well as new PDLC-based materials. In this work, we prepare PDLC films involving three elements (a nematic LC mixture, polymer and UV-curable silica nanoparticles (UVC-NPs)) and investigate the effect of the silica nanoparticle on the EO properties by combining morphology observation of polymer networks embedded in the PDLC. Experimental result clearly evident that UVC-NPs greatly improve the PDLC's performances (driving voltage, contrast ratio, hysteresis, and memory effect) thanks to the effective polymerization-induce phase separation.

超膨潤ラメラ相を反応場として用いたZIF-8ナノシートの合成 CiNiiでみる

Nanosheets (NSs) have recently attracted our attention because of their various fascinating properties. We proposed a new method to synthesize NSs by using hyperswollen lamellar (HL) phase, which is classified as one of the lyotropic liquid crystalline phases. This method uses the inside of bilayers comprised of amphiphilic molecules as sandwich-like reaction field. Here, we report the synthesis of ZIF-8 NSs; Calcinated ZIF-8 crystals which contain single cobalt atom are expected as precursors of high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis.

安息香酸とその場作製したN-ベンジリデンアニリンを側鎖に有する高分子液晶フィルムの光配向制御 CiNiiでみる

Photoalignment is one of the most remarkable methods to induce a molecular orientation, based on axis-selective photoreaction. This technique is applicable to liquid crystalline (LC) display device, optical functional films, polarization diffraction device, etc. In general, photoinduced optical anisotropy is generated when a photoresponsive polymeric film is exposed to linearly polarized (LP) light. N-benzylideneaniline (NBA) derivatives undergo a trans-cis-trans photoisomerization similar to azobenzene derivatives with LPUV light exposure. Herein, copolymethacrylates with phenylaldehyde (PA) and benzoic acid (BA) side groups are synthesized, and their photoinduced reorientation behavior is investigated using composite films of P6[PA/BA] and AN (Fig.1,2a). These films show the in situ formation of NBA moieties. Thermally stimulated cooperative photoinduced molecular reorientation is generated on the basis of the axis-selective photoisomerization of the NBA moieties formed in the composite films.

光硬化性液晶モノマーによるコレステリック液晶エマルションの安定化とレーザー発振挙動 CiNiiでみる

Cholesteric liquid crystalline (CLC) phases, which have helical superstructures, work as one-dimensionalphotonic crystals when the helical pitches are comparable to visible wavelengths. Therefore, one canobserve laser action in planner aligned CLC materials with an appropriate dye, which work as distributedfeedback (DFB) laser resonator. CLC droplets work as an omnidirectional laser resonator because of itsradial arrangement of the helical axes. If we use a dye-doped CLC mixture containing a photocurablenematic liquid crystal for the droplet phase, we will be able to stabilize the omnidirectional DFB laserresonator. Here, we report the laser action in dye-doped CLC droplets stabilized by photocuring.

ブルー相液晶エタロンと干渉フィルタを用いたリアルタイム分光撮像用バンドパスフィルタ CiNiiでみる

Recently, a realization of the real-time and small-sized NIR spectral imaging has been anticipated for remote sensing and dynamic analysis, and a development of small optical band-pass filter with fast-switching speed is the most important issue for that. In this paper, we have proposed an electrically tunable multi-bandpass filter using polymer-stabilized blue-phase liquid crystal (PSBP) etalon and multi-bandpass interference filter for real-time multi spectral imaging. As a result, we confirmed an electrically operation of PSBP etalon by measuring a refractive index modulation and clarified that a peak-transmittance of PSBP etalon is more than 80 % by optimizing a thickness of Ag reflective film.

The photorefractive property of the photoconductive ferroelectric liquid crystal composed of the photoconductive chiral dopants, liquid crystals and electron acceptor was investigated. The mixtures exhibit large gain coefficients and fast response time in two beam coupling experiment. The photorefractive properties of different concentration of chiral dopant samples were examined by two beam coupling experiment. Amplification of the optical signal of the image using the photorefractive effect was investigated.

アキラル液晶三量体が形成する多様な超分子キラル構造 CiNiiでみる

We prepared a liquid crystal trimer in which two phenylpyrimidine units and one biphenyl unit were connected via flexible odd-numbered methylene spacers, and investigated the physical properties. The compound exhibited a dark chiral conglomerate (DC) phase. We investigated the surface structure in the DC phase using scanning electron microscopy. Rod-like and porous structures were found to coexist in the surface. We discuss the formation mechanism of the chiral architectures.

分子構造がブルー相のナノ構造形成に及ぼす影響 CiNiiでみる

We prepared some blue phase liquid crystal mixtures consisting of a U-shaped nematic liquid-crystalline compound, a chiral dopant, and reactive monomers. They exhibited a cubic blue phase or an amorphous blue phase (BPIII) depending on concentration of the chiral dopant. The mixtures were photopolymerized in a cell. The cell was immersed in acetone to remove the liquid crystals and the unreacted monomers. We report here nanostructures of the Cubic BP and BPIII by SEM observation of the polymer networks imprinting along topological defect in the BPs.

分子配向を制御した液晶高分子フィルムの作製と湾曲挙動解析 CiNiiでみる

Flexibility and high durability of materials enable the high-performance applications in the field of flexible devices, wearable electronics and soft robotics. To reduce the surface strain caused by deformation, highly stretchable materials or thinner devices has been studied, but suppression of material deterioration is a challenge. In order to enhance performance of devices, the control of strain caused in a substrate is another promising pathway. In this study, we employed liquid-crystalline polymer films with controlled molecular orientation and evaluated surface strain by bending analysis. These show different strains and elastic moduli depending on molecular orientation direction. As the result, we successfully controlled surface strain by design of the initial molecular orientation.

コレステリッククロモニック液晶の高分子安定化の検討 CiNiiでみる

In a previous study we have shown that iridescent colors due to the selective reflection of cholesteric chromonic liquid crystals can be made by doping a nematic chromonic liquid crystal with water-soluble chiral additives. Herein we demonstrate that such chiral structures can be stabilized by introducing light-curable monomers. However, the colors of the produced films are not stable and uniform.
